Our History

Caraniche was established in Melbourne in 1993 by a group of psychologists with a shared vision for an independent, highly professional psychological service that brought together a client focus, evidence based practice and a collegiate work environment. Our aim was to bring expert treatment to the most challenging situations and client groups.

This aim has led to the development of a specialist psychology practice that provides a diverse range of services including; drug and alcohol treatment, Employee Assistance Programs (EAP), Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM), training and consultancy. Our clients range from marginalised individuals, to government departments and community agencies, and other health professionals. Over the past 20 years Caraniche has expanded to provide psychological services across Victoria and most recently, interstate to New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania.

Our first contracts were for the provision of drug and alcohol (AOD) treatment within Victorian prisons. These contracts were amongst the first privatised correctional services in Victoria and marked a new era of independence, accountability and professionalism in the rehabilitation of offenders. Our prison based programs have continued to evolve based on the latest research. We have retained this highly specialised work through multiple tender processes and currently provide AOD services in seven prisons across Victoria.

The need for independent psychological assessment, treatment and consultancy was not unique to the prison system. In 1995, Caraniche commenced its Workplace Service division providing outplacement counselling on behalf of Ernst and Young. This was the beginning of our service delivery to the corporate sector which has expanded into Employee Assistance Programs (EAP), mediation, training, workplace wellbeing and Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM). CISM in the workplace has become a key focus of our Workplace Services and we specialise in supporting health and welfare professionals and ‘caring for carers’. The combination of experience in direct service delivery to complex clients and expertise in trauma and staff support, uniquely positions us to support other professionals engaged in client work. We take particular pride in supporting and developing other psychologists through training and clinical supervision and our Graduate Clinic provides placements to over 20 post graduate psychology students a year.

As Caraniche enters its third decade, our services have expanded across the spectrum of service delivery from direct client work, to tertiary consultation, clinical supervision, training and research. These areas of the company are founded on the same originating principles of expert staff, high quality work and astute customer service and are underpinned by our values, vision and mission. Our commitment to the highest standards of clinical practice has cemented our reputation as Melbourne’s largest and most diverse independent psychology firm.
