Established in 2017 and Chaired by Caraniche’s Senior Aboriginal Cultural Consultant Ron Briggs, the Caraniche Aboriginal Reference Group (ARG) leads and evaluates Aboriginal cultural policies, guidelines and initiatives for our organisation



  • Meets bi-monthly and reports to the Senior Leadership Team
  • Develops the ARG work plan and monitor progress
  • Leads and evaluates Aboriginal cultural policies, guidelines and initiatives, e.g. clinical guidelines, client art policy, workplace and recruitment strategies, RAP etc.
  • Fostesr and promotes key stakeholder engagement and partnerships
  • Provides cultural advice to the other areas of the organisation

Work completed so far:              

  • Joined Justice Health Aboriginal Social and Emotional Wellbeing Reference Group
  • Formed Koorie Drug and Alcohol Program Advisory Group
  • Koorie Drug and Alcohol program developed and commenced pilot at Loddon Prison
  • Commencement of the Koorie Drug and Alcohol program delivery at Loddon and Marngoneet after a successful pilot program
  • Attended VACCHO Cultural Safety Training & completed company Cultural Safety Audit
  • Revised Treatment Suitability Assessment – currently reviewing psychometrics
  • Cultural safety training for all prisons/Youth Services (clinical) staff
  • Company Cultural Safety Audit – improvement areas incorporated into ARG workplan
  • Cultural Resources section added to the Resource Library – will continue to add to this including resources for staff and clients
  • Acknowledgment of Country included on website, email signatures and program manuals
  • Mirring-ian Day: Mirring-ian, which means “hear – understand” is from the Woiwurrung language, and was a cultural day held for all staff to recognise the importance of Aboriginal cultural awareness within our organisation, featuring a number of Aboriginal speakers, Aboriginal client stories and Aboriginal cultural activities
  • Internal staff newsletter communications (Niche News): Regular ARG posts about important cultural events and information 


Work underway:

  • Clinical guidelines for Working with Aboriginal Clients and Communities – currently being reviewed by one of our external Aboriginal cultural advisors
  • ARG External Advisory Committee
  • Partnerships: Worowa College, Dardi Munwurro, The Torch, Archie Roach Foundation
  • Pro bono counselling for Worawa college
  • Reconciliation week lunchtime learning event with our Senior Aboriginal Cultural Consultant
  • Registered our Innovate RAP with Reconciliation Australia and established a RAP working group who have commenced working on our RAP
