Graduate Clinic

The Caraniche Graduate Clinic was established in 2003 to train, mentor and supervise postgraduate psychology students from Victorian universities. It is regarded as a highly professional, reliable and sought-after centre for learning and developing the depth and breadth of skills essential to psychological practice. Students in the Graduate Clinic have an opportunity to work with a broad range of clients presenting with a variety of issues, such as substance use, offending, relationship dysfunction, depression, anxiety and trauma. Through this wide exposure to psychological practice, combined with weekly supervision and the informal feedback derived from involvement in a staff team, Caraniche provides students with fertile ground for learning.

At any one time, there are up to 11 students placed in Caraniche locations across Victoria with a total of 20 students completing placements throughout any one year. Placements are generally completed by Masters or Doctorate level students in forensic, clinical, community and counselling psychology from several Universities, including Deakin, Swinburne, Ballarat, Australian Catholic University, LaTrobe, Victoria University and RMIT. Caraniche will only accept students at this academic level due to the challenging nature of the clinical work. Registration as a Provisional Psychologist is also mandatory prior to commencing a placement at Caraniche.

All student placements aim to give the student an opportunity to experience first hand what it is like to work as a professional psychologist. Students can have exposure to a broad range of activities and clinical duties. These include assessment work, report writing, individual counselling, group therapy and group programs, training programs, and debriefing (with appropriate training). Students can also expect to receive broad exposure to the day-to-day operations involved in running a successful private psychology practice. This includes not only direct service delivery, but also the behind the scenes planning, preparation, marketing, and administration that sustains a healthy practice.

If you are interested in completing a placement with Caraniche, please forward your expression of interest directly to your University Placement Coordinator who will then liaise with Caraniche’s Graduate Clinic Coordinator. You can also find more information on Caraniche placements in the Student Placement Manual available on our website.

Caraniche also offers permanent or casual employment opportunities for students. These opportunities are available in a variety of settings with a broad range of clients and include both individual and group based interventions as well as research projects.
