RAP Progress Report

RAP Progress Report

Message from our RAP Champion, CEO Jacinta Pollard

Our RAP was first launched in December 2021 and documented our commitment to reconciliation and the active steps we would take to support justice for Aboriginal people.  As a provider within the justice system, we have an ongoing obligation to recognise and understand the harms caused to Aboriginal people and communities and take steps wherever we can to address them. This requires us to continually assess our role and to look for opportunities to support the self determination of Aboriginal people and organisations.

Throughout 2023/24, we have worked hard to ensure that our RAP actions are embedded across the organisation in a way that is authentic and meaningful. We have looked for opportunities to listen and learn from Aboriginal people and to exchange knowledge, wisdom and expertise.  We have sought out collaborative partnerships, working side by side with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and agencies.   Our 2024 RAP Barometer Survey tells us that our team is committed to reconciliation, righting the wrongs of the past and understanding more about Aboriginal culture and that our work environment is central to that learning.

We have made significant progress since the start of our RAP. Our collective understanding has increased, our actions are more visible, and our commitment to reconciliation embedded.   However, we recognise that these efforts are small compared to the injustice faced and we are committed to doing better as an organisation in providing a culturally safe environment and in influencing positive change for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients and communities.

2024 RAP Progress Report

Until the end of September 2024, we have completed over 95% of the actions we have committed to do as outlined in our Innovate RAP.  Highlights include:

  • Updating Leave Policy to reflect that staff are allowed to substitute public holidays, including 26 January, with another day and using wellbeing days for cultural events.
  • Issuing new Caraniche lanyards promoting our commitment to Reconciliation and First Nations identity with artwork.
  • Updating companywide document templates to add back-of-the-page and end-of-presentation statements promoting Caraniche’s commitment to reconciliation.
  • Utilising internal communications channels (e.g. Niche News, event tiles on intranet) more actively throughout the year by being aware of significant dates and encourage people to reflect on these dates.
  • Holding a National Reconciliation Week 2023 Morning Tea, attended by staff and Senior Leadership Team with invited speakers Tanya Peeler, Executive Director/Principal of Worawa Aboriginal College. This was a hybrid online and in-person event.
  • Holding a Lunchtime Learning Session where staff engaged in small group discussions and knowledge sharing facilitated by Decolonisation Yourself – Conversation Cards.
  • Participation of our Senior Leadership Team and RAP Working Group in external National Reconciliation Week, including the Formal Wear Drive via Haus of Dizzy who were organising donations of formal wears for the VIC NAIDOC Gala Ball.
  • Participation of our Senior Leadership Team and RAP Working Group in external  NAIDOC Week events.
  • Continuing to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander vendors.
  • Completed and submitted the annual RAP Impact Measurement Questionnaire to Reconciliation Australia.
  • Caraniche is committed to hold one Board meeting and one Senior Leadership Team meeting each year at Koorie Heritage Trust or similar.
  • Caraniche is committed to encourage/invite online (internal and external) meetings participants to share whose Country they are working from.
  • Advertisement of job vacancies include a statement that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are encouraged to apply. This reference is meant to signal to Aboriginal people that Caraniche is a space where Aboriginal people can build a career and achieve employment success in a supportive environment. Caraniche understands that including words in job advertisements require more deliverables/actions to ensure that pathways are created to attract and retain Aboriginal and Indigenous people so there is more work to be done in this space.
  • Participation in Workplace RAP Barometer 2024 to continue to understand the impact of our reconciliation activities.
